GOAL responds to flooding in Honduras

Media Statement, 24th October 2008

Torrential rains in Honduras have left over two dozen dead and thousands homeless. GOAL is responding to this escalating situation by providing supplementary food as well as non-food items to the displaced and threatened population.

In Department of Yoro, a region in central Honduras where GOAL works, an initial group of 900 families (approx 4,500 people) who are outside of the urban centres and require assistance have been identified for aid. GOAL is distributing non-food items such as hygiene kits, kitchen kits, fresh water containers, water purification supplies, and blankets to these people. This distribution is thanks to a grant of €75,000 from the Irish Aid Emergency
Fund.

GOAL is also partaking in the distribution of 12 metric tonnes of food aid to displaced people. Over the next five days over 1,500 rations will be distributed to people forced from their homes, in partnership with the World Food Programme.

With the rains set to continue, GOAL anticipates that further response will be necessary. GOAL is actively assessing communities who have not received aid thus far to identify their needs. GOAL is well placed to assess these communities through a GOAL-installed radio network that was set up over the past three years so that rural villages can communicate during times of emergency. In all, 36 radios have been placed in strategic points throughout GOAL’s area of operation. GOAL’s staff on the ground report that the radio system is working well and has ensured that those who require assistance are receiving it swiftly.
