Media Statement, 9th July 2008
GOAL has appealed directly to Micheál Martin not to interfere
with the budgets of implementing Irish Aid agencies or Irish Missionaries.
“These are among the very best groups which work directly
with the poorest of the poor, delivering lifesaving aid,” said
John O’Shea, GOAL CEO.
“It may come as a surprise to the Irish public, but there
are precious few organisations or agencies which are at the coalface
of Third World delivery. Much of the cash is spent on peripheral
activities which in my opinion don’t impact on the poor”
“It would be catastrophic for the Minister to take money
from the budgets of these groups whose daily task is to save lives
especially since we are channelling millions through corrupt and
brutal African regimes”
