GLOBAL COMMUNITY MUST
HELP TO REBUILD HAITI
The decision of the G7
countries to cancel Haiti’s huge debt burden will not,
in itself, result in the stricken Caribbean nation making
a satisfactory recovery from the recent earthquake.
That is the view of GOAL’s CEO
John O’Shea who said today:
“This is a welcome development
and unquestionably a significant move on behalf of the world’s
richest nations.
“However, the Haitian Government
and Haitian people will require the direct intervention of
the International Community on a long term basis if the country
is to be rebuilt, such was the scale of the devastation caused
by the earthquake.
“There remains the need for one
powerful country to take responsibility for ensuring that
the physical reconstruction of Haiti is completed effectively.
“The business of rebuilding thousands
of schools, hospitals, factories and the re-housing of 1.5
million people, can only be achieved by massive assistance
from the International Community,” Mr. O’Shea
added.
GOAL has already completed a number
of major distributions of food and non-food items reaching
thousands of people in the Haitian capital.

ETHIOPIA RESPONSE
GOAL has expanded its emergency response efforts in Ethiopia and is calling on people in Ireland and the UK for support in the wake of an appeal by the Ethiopian Government for food aid for 6.2 million people affected by the latest drought.
The drought is a result of four years of bad harvests and has been made worse by conflict, population growth and climate change.
GOAL has been implementing emergency response activities in southern Ethiopia since late last year and is currently using specialised therapeutic food to assist in the treatment of almost 8,000 severely malnourished children.
The aid agency is also ready to provide essential medicines in the event of an outbreak of disease and is distributing seeds, tools and fertiliser to 30,000 farming households.
Currently working at 16 individual field locations across Ethiopia, GOAL intends to expand these activities into a further four field sites.
Low Administration Costs
GOAL is proud that, since its inception in 1977, the organisation’s administration costs have remained exceptionally low. One of the ways we have achieved this efficiency is through the secondment of staff from several companies in the corporate sector. GOAL is indebted to these firms for their continued support.
